Scholar Development Programs

To further its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (the Foundation) offers some exciting opportunities for racial and ethnic minority law students to further education, experience, and networking in legal areas related to natural resources and energy law – tuition scholarships and travel reimbursement funding to attend Foundation conferences!

These programs are available to law students enrolled full-time at any accredited law school in the U.S. or Canada who identify as persons of color. LL.M. students are not eligible for these programs. Applicants must join the Foundation as a member to be eligible for these programs (student membership is free). Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tuition Scholarships

The Foundation’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Program funds tuition scholarships for law students who identify as persons of color who demonstrate an interest in working in an area of natural resources law (including legal work relating to oil and gas, mining, renewable or other energy, water, public lands, environmental, and related areas) and serious and diligent pursuit of academic achievement (although academic performance is not determinative).

In selecting award recipients from among the applicants, the Foundation’s Scholarships Committee will also consider the student’s leadership ability, year in law school, and financial need.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Travel Reimbursement Program

Attending a Foundation conference is a great way for a law student to learn about natural resources, energy, environmental and related areas of law in practice, and to meet and network with practitioners, in-house counsel, government agency lawyers, and others who practice in these areas! Look for upcoming programs you may want to attend at fnrel.org/programs.

This program supports attendance at Foundation conferences by law students who identify as persons of color who demonstrate an interest in working in an area of natural resources law (including legal work relating to oil and gas, mining, renewable or other energy, water, public lands, environmental, and related areas) by providing travel funding for Foundation institutes and certain short courses. Approved travel funding may include waived registration fees, course materials, and reimbursement of expenses for travel and accommodations.

Applications for funding must indicate an interest in the subject matter of the conference and provide contact information of a professor, mentor, employer, or other reference. Applications for funding are subject to amounts remaining under the budget for the program and approval by the Foundation’s Law Student Program Coordinating Committee.
